MAF Warns Against Jordanian Prisoner Exchange with ISIS

/// PRESS RELEASE ///

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Move America Forward, the largest grassroots pro-troop organization in the U.S., warned Jordan against their plan to conduct a prisoner exchange with the terrorist group calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, better known as ISIS, or ISIL. Jordanian officials made public a plan to trade for a Jordanian pilot captured by ISIS in exchange for freeing an Iraqi terrorist convicted of taking part in several hotel bombings in 2005 and sentenced to death for her terrorist crimes.

“This is a dangerous path that the Jordanians are going down, and I would urge them to immediately back out of this deal and completely sever all diplomatic channels with ISIS,” said Danny Gonzalez, Communications Director for Move America Forward.

“There is a fundamental problem at the core of this controversy that says you should never, ever negotiate with non-state actors like ISIS. Though they call themselves the Islamic State, they are not a country and should never be treated with the legitimacy that we treat a nation-state. They are a group of terrorists, Islamic extremists, and they have no diplomatic standing. Once you start negotiating with them as you would a nation-state, you give them legitimacy and that gives them power.”

“Jordan should focus on joining the United States and other Arab countries to hunt down and eradicate ISIS, not parley with them,” said Gonzalez. “This also sets a very dangerous precedent because if ISIS gets what they want this time, they know there is future potential for more ransoms or exchanges and that will lead to more people being kidnapped. It immediately raises the value of any potential kidnapping target such as any Americans that may be in Iraq, be they aid workers or members of our military,” warned Gonzalez.

“The United States should also not be negotiating with ISIS, and President Obama has to share some of the blame for this after he was willing to negotiate prisoner exchanges with the Taliban in return for releasing Guantanamo Detainees.

“That set a bad precedent that contributes to this situation and we need to roll that back and re-affirm our policy that the United States and Her allies do not, and will never be willing to negotiate with terrorists regardless of what name they call themselves by,” said Gonzalez.

Move America Forward has been an advocate in favor of Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2004 and has sent representatives to Iraq multiple times including trips in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011. Before the rise of ISIS in Iraq, MAF staffers and spokespersons spent weeks embedded with American troops, met with local Iraqi military and political leaders to build diplomatic relations, and reported back news from the front lines.
