FBI investigating FOUR pipe bombs or ‘hoax’ bombs found at recruiting staions
PORTLAND, Ore. (Map, News) - The federal government is offering $20,000 in rewards to catch those who left hoax bombs at four military recruiting stations in Oregon last year.

The devices, which were harmless, carried the words, "Die Weisse Rose," the White Rose, which was the name of a German dissident student group that opposed Adolf Hitler, primarily in the 1940s.

The pseudo pipe bombs were found March 24 at a Marine Corps recruiting office in Salem, May 10 at a recruiting office in Portland, Aug. 11 at a military recruiting center in Astoria and Nov. 18 at a recruiting center in Salem.

Portland FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele said Wednesday that no threats were called in regarding the fake bombs and that they were found by people such as janitors and, in one case, a police officer.
She said she was not aware of similar incidents in other states. It was not clear whether the devices were the work of one person or a group.

Protests at recruiting offices in Oregon have taken place sporadically at least since the Vietnam War, and there has been some damage.

The most serious was an arson-caused fire that nearly destroyed the ROTC building on the University of Oregon campus.
