“Senator Durbin seems intent on undermining public support for our troops and their missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.  His conduct is inexcusable and he must be held accountable for his abhorrent behavior,” said Melanie Morgan, Co-Chair of Move America Forward.

“Senator Durbin’s non-apology is not accepted,” Morgan added.

BUT DIDN’T DURBIN APOLOGIZE?

In a speech on the Senate floor made on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 Durbin compared the allegations against U.S. Troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba with the atrocities committed by, “Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime—Pol Pot or others—that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.”

Three days later Durbin was defiant in his position that his assault against U.S. Troops was justified saying, “I’m certainly not going to be intimidated by the right-wing message machine.  If I’m going to back off every time they decide they’re unhappy with my statements, then I really won’t be doing my job.”

Durbin since made a statement one week later that was mis-reported by some news outlets as being an “apology” for his remarks.

In fact, Durbin did not apologize for his conduct at all but instead issued a “Statement of Regret” where he suggested that, “Some may believe that my remarks crossed the line.” Durbin made clear in his remarks that he was not one of those who believed he had crossed the line.

“The only thing Dick Durbin ‘regrets’ is that he is forced to face the consequences for his shameful conduct.  The American people are fuming mad that a U.S. Senator has provided aid and comfort to the enemy by making false accusations against the heroic men and women of our Armed Forces,” said Howard Kaloogian, Co-Chair of Move America Forward.

“Senator Durbin is this generation’s Jane Fonda.  At least you could understand Ms. Fonda’s misguided conduct, as she was merely an actress.

“Senator Durbin has failed to honor his congressional oath, for he has become himself a domestic enemy who seeks to lower American support for our troops, and provide verbal fodder for America’s enemies abroad.  He should be censured by his Senate colleagues – and held accountable by the people of Illinois,” Kaloogian said.

In his “statement of regret,” Durbin said he hoped time would prove him right about his allegations of torture by American forces – in spite of the criticism against him, quoting Abraham Lincoln who said, “If the end brings me out right what is set against me won’t amount to anything.”

Durbin has for two years sought congressional hearings to investigate allegations of misconduct by U.S. troops.

“Senator Durbin has made it clear that he still stands behind his accusations against U.S. Troops.  He has offered the lame excuse that he never meant to disparage our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen.  But if not them, then who was it that he was accusing of acting with such butchery and murderous behavior as the Nazis, Soviets and Pol Pot?” asked Melanie Morgan.

NOTE: From July 7-17, 2005, Melanie Morgan and Howard Kaloogian in conjunction with the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) will be leading a contingent of radio talk show hosts from around the nation to Iraq – to provide a forum for our troops to report on the accomplishments and good news that they believe has not been covered by other media outlets.
