To Russia with Warm Fuzzies An 11-year-old from California took on a major project to help children in Russia. He was inspired by a news story. At the beginning of September, more than 300 people were killed after militants took control of a school in Beslan, Russia. Many of those who died were children. When 11-year-old Adam Johns of California heard the story, he decided he had to do something. Adam couldn’t stop thinking about those who survived the attack. His mother says he wanted to find a way to comfort them. “And I said, that would be wonderful if we did and so then later on that evening he just thought, looking at his own teddy bears in his own room, he said, ‘Mom, can’t we give all the kids a teddy bear?’” “I think that, since the kids got attacked, that I would certainly feel scared to go back to school and they’ll eventually have to go back,” Adam explains. “So I think it would be awesome that we send them teddy bears to let them know that people care and help them go back to school.” Adam dubbed his mission: Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy. He started with bears from his own collection, then started taking donations. He was able to collect 5,000 stuffed animals. Adam says Operation Fuzzy Wuzzy was a big success. He’s not even sad about giving up his fuzzy friends.
“No, not at all,” he said, “because I know it will help other kids out.”
