Day 2: Salt Lake City

Day 2: Salt Lake City

The “We Support Our Troops” Bus Tour continues on its second day with a stop in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Marine Mom Deborah Johns and Gold-Star Dad Joseph Williams appeared live on the air with KSL AM-1160 host Doug Wright before addressing a rally in front of the Salt Palace Convention Center.

Gordon Jones, of Congressman Chris Cannon’s office wanted to show his support for the troops and to relay the Congressman’s support as well.  “They [the soldiers] are going to transform the Middle East,” he said.  Jennifer McGill of Bountiful, Utah, brought her son Isaac out to sign a banner to be sent to the troops.

KSL TV (NBC Affiliate) covered the event along with many other media outlets.  Here’s a link to their coverage of the event. Also writing on the tour’s stop in Salt Lake City was the Deseret News.  CLICK HERE to read the story in the Deseret News.

Candace Chilcott and Deborah Johns

Also present was Candace Chilcott, a Blue-Star mother.  Mrs. Chilcott has two sons currently serving in Iraq, one of whom served for a year in Afghanistan.  Her son-in-law is also currently serving in Iraq, and her daughter served for a year and a half.  Fighting back tears, she said, “They do it because they love us, and I am determined to let the rest of the country know it.”

The Mondragon Children - Their father is currently serving in Iraq.

Another special attendee was the Mondragon family, Shana and her three boys, Daniel, Jacob, and Sam.  Their husband and father is currently serving a tour in Iraq and is stationed in Ramadi.  Mrs. Mondragon heard Deborah Johns on the radio and wanted to bring her children out to sign a banner.  “My children have never been to a support-the-troops rally, and I wanted to show them that people believe in what their Daddy is doing,” she said.

The tour will stay the night in Cheyenne, Wyoming and hold a rally and press conference in front of the Wyoming statehouse in the morning.  From there, it heads to Denver, Colorado and Lincoln, Nebraska.  At each stop, banners will be available to sign with messages of support for the troops.  The banners will be sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Final Stop of Day 1 - in Elko, Nevada

Elko, NV Monday Night

Deborah Johns Greets Supporters in Elko, Nevada in Front of the Tour Bus

Day 1 of the pro-troop bus tour concluded with a rally and press conference in front of the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV.  Loyal supporters turned out late in the night to greet and cheer despite the late hour and chill in the air.

The stop was the Top Story in the Elko Daily Free Press newspaper.  You can read that story - CLICK HERE

Stan Denison of Oklahoma happened to be in Elko on business when he heard about the Move America Forward tour coming through.  He wanted to support the troops and President Bush.  “Regardless of party, you have to support the Commander-in-Chief,” he said.

Ed and Emma Barrington of Elko came out to support the troops and the bus.  They believe that Cindy Sheehan is putting the troops in danger.  “We feel for her loss, but that does not give her the right to put the boys still over there in harm’s way.” Mr. Barrington served with the Navy SeaBees in Korea.

Jim Collins (4 and a half years in the United States Navy) and his wife Juanita (21 years, United States Air Force) made their feelings clear: “Cindy doesn’t speak for us.  We can speak for ourselves.”

The cross-country tour resumes Tuesday with a stop in Salt Lake City.  Marine Mom Deborah Johns and Gold Star Dad Joseph Williams will appear live on the air with KSL AM-1160 with host Doug Wright before a rally and press conference at the Salt Palace Convention Center.  Day 2 wraps up in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Sheets will be available to be signed with messages of support for the troops.  The Sheets will be sent to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Monday’s Stop in Reno, Nevada

Reno, Nevada - Monday, September 19th

Deborah Johns Interviewd by NBC Affiliate in Reno- KRNV TV-4

Supporters gather in front of our rally location at the Kietzke Wal Mart.

The “We Support Our Troops And Their Mission” Bus Tour continued on its first day of a weeklong trip across the country with a large rally outside of the Kietzke Wal-Mart in Reno, Nevada.  Marine Mom Deborah Johns and Gold-Star Dad Joseph Williams addressed a crowd of about 200 before appearing live on the air with Bill Manders on AM-780 KOH.  The Reno stop was the fourth on a tour of more than twenty cities, which culminates with a large rally in Washington, DC on Sunday, September 25th.

The rally attracted many supporters, but others stopped by who just happened to be shopping at the Wal-Mart.  Judy Kerr, of Reno saw the crowd and stayed because she supports the troops and disagrees with the anti-war message.  “The boys over there don’t need any more standing in their way,” she said.

Many turned out after hearing about the scheduled rally on KOH radio.  Chris Burgess, William Sousa, Tony Hayes, and Russell Hayes, all of Sun Valley, wanted to support the troops.  Mr. Sousa’s brother served for a year in Iraq and is now a member of the Army National Guard.

Kathleen Mull’s son served six months in Afghanistan following 9/11, and fought at Tora Bora, before serving for a year in Iraq.  Currently, he serves in the National Guard.  Mrs. Mull believes that the anti-war activists are very hurtful to familes who have relatives serving overseas.  “You have to support the whole project,” she said.  “I have a very hard time with the people who claim to support the troops, but not the war.”

POW/MIA Matt Maupin

Mrs Mull also wanted to call attention to Matt Maupin, of Ohio.  Maupin is considered Missing, but his family believes him to be a POW.  He has been missing since April 9, 2004.  To show her support, and to raise awareness, Mull wears a lapel pin with Matt’s picture on it.  “Very few actually know that we have a POW, and I can’t understand why.”

The cross-country bus tour continues Tuesday with stops in Salt Lake City, Utah and Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Johns and Williams will appear, and sheets can be signed with messages of support for the troops.  The sheets will be sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Sacramento Stop of Pro-Troop Bus Tour

Monday, September 19- Sacramento, CA

Supporters Greeted the Pro-Troop Bus Tour in Sacramento

The “We Support Our Troops & Their Mission” Bus Tour made its third stop of its first
day across the country in front of the Move America Forward headquarters at 770 L Street in Sacramento, California.  Talk show host Mark Williams of NewsTalk 1530 AM - KFBK emceed, Marine Mom Deborah Johns and Gold-Star Dad Joseph Williams addressed the crowd, and singer Kaweah Angel sang the Star-Spangled Banner and led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.  The tour will make nineteen more stops, winding up in Washington, DC for a rally on September 25.

The enthusiastic crowd included Bunny Troutman of Fair Oaks, who turned out to let the delegation leading the tour know that she supports our troops and their mission, no matter what the media might say to undermine American support for the war against terrorism.  Mary Burgess of Vacaville, who also attended the rally at the Vacaville Veterans Hall, wanted to support the troops, the Flag, and the Pledge [of Allegiance].  “My son goes to school near Travis Air Force Base, and I seem them flying out every day.  I just wanted to thank them,” she said.

Also in attendance was Bill Hutchens and his wife Ruth of Galt.  The Hutchens turned out to support the son of a church acquaintance, whose son is currently serving in Iraq.

Connie Pueblo and her friend Kim Parigoris, both of Lodi, were first-timers at a support-the-troops rally.  Mrs. Pueblo’s brother, a member of the National Guard, served a tour in Iraq and is currently in New Orleans, helping with the Hurricane Katrina cleanup effort.  Mrs. Parigoris came out because of the media.  She wanted to send a message of support to the troops that could not be twisted.

The tour left for two more stops of the first day with a rally at the Wal-Mart in Reno, Nevada and a stop at the Red Lion Inn in Elko, Nevada.  Sheets can be signed with messages of support at each stop along the way.  The Sheets will be sent to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan at the conclusion of the rally.

There was a story about the event in the Sacramento Bee.  - CLICK HERE to Read the Story (free registration required). Also, a member of FreeRepublic.com - FReeper “Syncro” - posted his account of the first three stops, including pictures.  You can access his report by CLICKING HERE.
